About Maqamat Music Center

Welcome to the Maqamat Music Center, a platform for the promotion and performance of classical, sacred, and popular community music of the Middle East.

The diverse Middle Eastern cultures, including the Jewish culture, have enriched each other over millennia. Located at the center of this vast region,  Israel is a unique crossroads between these musical cultures and traditions. Diverse and reciprocal influences have contributed to the creation of an authentic genre of Israeli World Music. In this respect, the Maqamat Music Center aspires to support values of multicultural harmony and mutual respect.

The Maqamat Academy of Eastern Music, a core activity of the Center, offers an extensive academic curriculum with the best teachers in the field.

The Center offers public activities such as concerts, workshops with national and international masters, and special public events, including master-classes with Elshan Mansurov (Azerbaijan), Zohar Fresco, Yossi Fine, Amit Carmeli, Shye Ben-Tzur, Liat Zion, Harel Shachal and others

In the near future, a new project Maqamat Media, will offer digital media and internet access to content originating from the Music Center and Academy including live concerts, recordings and programming based on the musical traditions of the Maqam.

The Maqamat Music Center and Academy were envisioned to be a home for communal cooperation and creative dialogue for teachers and students, professional and amateur musicians, and music lovers in general. We are growing an organic center based on music as a hub of deep cultural and spiritual sharing.

The Center operates out of The Khan of the White Donkey, a beautiful and ancient stone building located in the magical Artists’ Quarter of Safed – a city rich with Jewish and Arabic history and art, and a wondrous source of inspiration.

Khan of the White Donkey founder Moshe-Tov Kreps initiated the vision for this Center and serves as Academy President.
